KNHS’s 2014 Roof Program opens tomorrow, August 8th at 9:00am.
In the spirit of service learning, Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services, Western Michigan University, and AmeriCorps have partnered to pilot a financial education series in Spanish. The first workshop will be on April 1st from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at 816 Washington Ave, Kalamazoo, MI inside Edison Neighborhood Association’s Community Room. This workshop will address goal setting and budgeting, understanding the credit game, and asset building through financial products. Through financial education, these organizations aim to bring together and strengthen the Hispanic community of Kalamazoo, especially empowering monolingual residents to make informed financial decisions.
Organizers extend an invitation to anyone interested in attending the event. This is an open event but will be conducted in Spanish. If you would like to volunteer, help to market the event, or want to attend with a group please contact Crystal Elissetche at 269.364.2548 or via email at Fcdept@knhs.org.

This activity is brought to you in partnership with the City of Kalamazoo
KNHS is excited to announce that we have received an Award of Merit from The Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Commission for our rehabilitation of 744 Forest St. and our ongoing contribution to the preservation of the historic character of Kalamazoo. We are grateful for this recognition by the Historic Preservation Commission, and will continue to fearlessly work on historic properties and in the historic districts.
744 Forest is a home in our Lease Purchase program that was rehabilitated in 2012 in partnership with the City of Kalamazoo. KNHS staff took great care to respect the historic character and materials of this building, while updating it to meet modern housing standards. Improvements included window restoration and weatherization, whole house insulation, refinishing of hardwood flooring, new kitchen and bath, and high efficiency appliances and HVAC system.
Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services is seeking new contractors and tradespeople to work on housing rehabilitation projects in Kalamazoo. Year round, KNHS helps residents in Kalamazoo engage in a wide variety of housing restoration activities, including moderate interior and exterior rehabilitation, roofing and siding, and major whole house rehabilitation. In an effort to help these residents obtain competitive prices from quality contractors, KNHS continually seeks new companies to place on its pre-approved contractor list. Contractors on the list will receive bid invitations for trades applicable to their company as projects become available. Companies interested in being placed on this list should download our Contractor Handbook and return the required forms to our construction department.
While it is common for KNHS to engage with General Contractors for many projects, Subcontractors and laborers are encouraged to submit information to KNHS as well. As KNHS works hard to create Section 3 employment opportunities for low-to-moderate income companies and tradespeople, a list of Section 3 residents and companies will be made available for Contractors seeking new hires. All contractors and subcontractors interested in qualifying as Section 3 Businesses, and residents interested being placed on the Section 3 list, should download KNHS’s Section 3 Handbook and return the required forms.
KNHS is seeking bid proposals for one rehabilitation project. Contractors that have been pre-qualified for these prjects are encouraged to submit bids. If you are interested in bidding, but are not currently pre-qualified, please contact Matt Milcarek. Information regarding bidding can also be obtained here.
Please note that all interested contractors must attend a pre-bid site visit on Monday April 1st at 9:30am.
